I wasn't able to attend the Priscilla Jones workshop which I was really annoyed about as I am a great fan of hers. However I have been sent some images of the canvases completed on the day and I am even more annoyed that I missed it now as it all looks so good.

Young Embroiderers' Group Millefleurs Hanging

The Young Embroiderers' Group meet on Tuesday for a printing session. One of the activities we did was to use leaves to print on felt to add to our hanging.

We painted the leaves with green acrylic paint and them used a roller to press the leaf onto the cream felt fabric.

The results were so really delicate effects.

When they were dry we cut the shape of the leaf out and carefully painted the edges with green paint.

We then added them to the hanging and the effect is stunning, The felt leaves look like porcelain and have really broken up the the mass of coloured flowers on the hanging which have been made over several sessions from felt, suffolk puffs etc

And we even have a little pig...........

Jane is a teacher ofJapanese Embroidery having studied and passed the necessary tests with theJapanese “ Grand Master” and his family in America. Her illustrated talkcovered the history, techniques, tools and threads required to create thetypical Japanese embroidery. She showed some of her work and explained how thedelicate and beautiful stitches were worked. This was a very interesting andinformative talk and created a great deal of interest amongst the members.

The Lightfoot Letters Exhibition Private View on the 10th September

"Took my artist friend to see your exhibition at the Brindley and boy were we both impressed - it was beautiful. The whole concept of it was very emotional and that came across in the pieces.June bought a number of postcards to send to friends as she said she was transported back to her childhood with so many aspects of the exhibition. Look forward to your next joint venture." Comment from a visitor to the exhibition.

Maria Walker's Exhibition with poet Angela Topping at the Brindley, Runcorn is underway and is being well received by visitors. There is a private view and artists' talk on Saturday 10th September 1pm to 3pm, when the artists will be discussing their work and the amazing coincidence surrounding the bundle of old letters written in the 1920's, which has been the inspiration for this exhibition.The event is free and refreshments will be served.

Workshop with Fiona Wilson

Fiona Wilson's workshop in July was all to do with experimenting and trying out new ways of stitching using your machine. Before we did any stitching we 'loosened ourselves up' with some experimental drawing which is a good technique to use before you start a new project. Fiona introduced us to some of the techniques she uses , such as drawing with a pen fastened onto a 3ft stick and drawing without looking at the object.

Although our drawings were very experimental, when they were cut up into small squares they were a great resource to use for our experimental stitching.
Fiona also introduced us to a Embellishing machine, which again she uses in a very experimental way. often using it on paper.

The outcome of the day's experimenting was a selection of samples which can be used a reference or as the basis for more work.

Fiona's method of using experimental drawing as a basis for stitch definitely allows her to come up with some unique and exciting work. I think I will start to experiment more with drawing before I start a new piece of work.

Young Embroiderers August 2011

Our August meeting was attended by a select group of members who had a really good time printing. They brought a book with them and made a cover for it. They printed onto fabric using acrylic paints and they also made their own printing blocks to fit in with the subject of their book. We also had a go at making our own cords using door handles and a lot of twisting.

Fiona Wilson inspired us all with her interesting talk and slide show about how she made the change from a stressful career in marketing to becoming a successful artist.

It was lovely to see how Fiona's work had progressed from her early work doing an art foundation course to her recent work for the MA (Textiles) at MMU.
Fiona's career was given a boost when she was chosen to be an Embroiderers' Guild Scholar and we could definitely see why she had been chosen.

For our june meeting we were treated to a take and slideshow by the talented textile artist Priscilla Jones. He slide show showed us her journey from an embroidery student at Manchester Metropolitan University to the successful textile artist she is today. Priscilla showed us how strong drawing skills underpins her current practise, often drawing everyday objects and items of clothing.

The Young Embroiderers ran a flower making workshop

We held an Open Day on the 21st May for the first time this year and we wanted to make this event different from our bi annual exhibition, which will be held next year. The emphasis for this event was on demonstrations and workshops all run by members . The event was designed to publicise our group and raise awareness for textiles and embroidery, and perhaps recruit some more members. We decided that all the profits from the event would go to a local charity, and the boiler fund at Chelford Village Hall was chosen as a worthy cause.

Liz Almond's enthusiasm about blackwork rubbed off on all of us at out April meeting. Not only did she bring lots of examples of her work for us to pass around she explained how easy it was to do. Liz does her own designs and her results are quite stunning and you don't just have to keep to black on white. She showed us examples of work done using variegated coloured thread with the added sparkle of beads.

Amy Senogles March 2011

Amy Senogles' work is based on the premise that fashion should be sustainable and made to last rather than have the built-in obsolescence of much of today's high street fashion. She graduated from a BA in Embroidery at Manchester School of Art in 2008. She has used recycled textiles and embroidery to create a series of pattern shaped panels which show how they could be used in garment design. Everyone found Amy's work and philosophy very inspirational.

Stitched postcards workshop March 2011

On saturday we held a workshop for members and for the first time we invited along the young embroiderers as unfortunately we had had to cancel their february meeting.
The focus of the workshop was to the stitched postcards which all branches are making for 2012. Our allocated country is Ecuador and we all found loads of inspiration in their flag and country.
The workshop was run by three of the members, Angela, Carol and Maria, who each set up stall to demonstrate a different technique. Participants could chose if they wanted to have a go at silk painting, needle-felting and applique.

Alison Bramley 'Frazzled and Dazzled'

Alison Bramley came to talk to us in February 2011 and brought lots of her wonderful quilts with her. She explained that she calls her talk frazzled and dazzled and she hopes we will be dazzled by her quilts and she feels frazzled after making them.
And we were all dazzled by her quilts, not just because of their jewel-like brilliant colours but also because of the sheer quantity and size of them and the fact that they must have taken hours to make. Her talk was a real inspiration and she ran a workshop for members the following day.

We were very grateful to Carol Mowl from Beetlefelt who came to our January 2011 meeting in place of our advertised speaker who unfortunately was unable to come.
Carol runs 'Beetlefelt' which is based in Chorlton, Manchester and we were all fascinated by her passion and knowledge of dyeing using natural materials. If you, like me, thought that natural dyes meant sludgy brown colours then you will be surprised at the wide range of (bright) colours that can be achieved using materials as ordinary as onion skins and rusty nails.
Carol's approach to natural dyeing (boil everything for a hour) really appealed to me as I am not scientific by nature. I loved the way she is happy to experiment, although I must say I would draw the line as using my husband's urine as a mordant - however good the colour might turn out- but we must all make sacrifices for our art.

Hark the Chelford Angels Sing

The competition for the Christmas meeting was to design an make an 'original ' angel. When the committee came up with title they meant that it was not to come out of a kit but some of the entries were decidedly 'original' and not at all angelic ( especially those Carol Stow and Jenny Rydell!!!)
The angelic winner was created by Linda Towse and she was awarded the rose bowl which was handed over to Linda by last year's winner Bernadette and Chairperson Scilla.
The evening was spent making christmas cards and trying our hand at at Christmas Quiz.

The Young Embroiderers are continuing with the theme of flowers and are working together to create a floral wall hanging using many different techniques. At this meeting we made a selection of flowers from suffolk puffs, gathering and layering techniques. We also made some with faces!. The idea is that we will continue this theme for the next couple of meetings and that the hanging we make will be exhibited and them donated to a worthy cause. If any 'grown up' members have any flower making techniques they would like to share with us please let Maria Walker know as you are welcome to come along to out next meeting on the 15th Feb 2011

Maggie Smith treated us to an interesting and informative talk entitled' Still Life as an Inspiration for Embroidery". Maggie is a very talented textile artist and experienced tutor and all learned a lot from it and felt very inspired.

For our september 2010 meeting we were honoured to have a talk by Sarah Burgess entitled '"Glove Stories". Sarah is a member of the Practical Study Group and has had her work exhibited in ' Art of the Stitch".
Her talk and slideshow took us back to how she began her career in textiles, her work with the Practical Study Group, her detailed research into the history of glove making and her artistic interpretation of this work.
We were all really impressed by the professionalism of Sarah's work.

The members of Chelford and North Cheshire's Young Embroiderers Guild had a ' blooming' good time at their August meeting. In the morning the young embroiderers learned how to make fabric flowers out of their old jeans and other fabrics. They then attached the flowers to hair clips and head bands. In the afternoon they had another go at making button jewellery and could add the flowers to their jewellery creations

Linda Miller workshop June 2010

The following day Linda ran a workshop for us where she showed us the secrets of creating densely stitched machine embroideries. She led us through the techniques firstly using a simple heart-shape which could be made into a brooch and then moving on to create a more complicated design if we felt ready for that. Everyone completed at least one item and everyone was pleased with their results.

For June we were treated to a talk and slideshow by Linda Miller whose work I have admired for a long time. Her style is distinctive and unique. She creates rich, colourful, humorous embroideries. Her work has a naive cheerful quality about it which makes you want to smile. We really appreciated that she travelled all the way from Winchester to Chelford to come and talk to us. She shared her amusing anecdotes with us and gave us an insight into what its like to be a successful textile artist.

Everyone went button mad at the Young Embroiderers' workshop in June. Maria Walker ran the workshop in the morning and shared her expertise with the young participants
and everyone managed to make two bracelets in the morning either for themselves or as presents for their lucky mums. In the afternoon Ann Ford showed everyone how to make brooches out of suffolk puffs and of course buttons!!!!!

Textile Extravaganza May 2010

The 22nd May saw the Chelford bi-annual exhibition. This year the theme for the members exhibition was 'Rags to Riches' and we saw a wide range of pictures and three dimensional work exploring the creative art of recycling. The winner of the competetion was Ann Ford and she is seen here receiving her prize. As you can see all the work was of a very high standard.
The event was very well attended and there was a wide range of suppliers selling everything the textile artist could wish for. There were also demonstrations and workshops( run by the young embroiderer's).

For the May meeting we were treated to a talk by Marge Quinn, a lady who has made more than the average amount of boxes!!!!!
She brought about 30 boxes for us to admire and we were all very impressed at the amount of work she had put into the making of them. It is obviously a very skilled task.

Pauline Codding came in March and gave us a really interesting talk and demonstration on felt making. She brought a selection of wonderful bags and prefelts which were for sale.
Her felt bags are based upon simple, smooth, sculptural lines and explore colour by combining dyed merino wool with vibrant tussah silk fibres. Her creative textiles reflect a deep interest in landscape and use blended fibres and recycled fabrics to create subtle atmospheres

Who invented the sewing machine ?

January saw us having a really interesting talk by Sue Sercombe on the history of the sewing machine. We had all assumed that it was Singer but actually the design of the sewing machine was developed over quite a long period by a number of different people. Sue treated us to an amusing and informative talk and even brought along her collected of pre 1900 sewing machines - although we were slightly concerned that the table might give was under the weight !!!

Christmas Cheer

Our December meeting was a fun packed evening full of christmas cheer. We had two competitions- one was to bring in the oldest piece of embroidery you had made and the other was to make a christmas card. We were amazed at how people had kept items they had embroidered at school and it just goes to show how treasured our 'works of art' are. Members were asked to vote for the piece they liked best and the runaway winner was Bernadette with her lovely dolls. Bernadette was awarded the small rose bowl as her prize.
We also had to vote for the christmas cards we had made and brought in and Elsa's card got the most votes.
We spent the rest of the evening participating in a 'hands on session' where we all made a christmas card.

Clyde Olliver visted our Guild in November and treated us to a talk and slideshow. It was interesting hear how Clyde's artistic career and work had developed from his working as a restorer of antique rugs, to doing to degree in textiles at Goldsmiths, to the present day. Clyde's working with slate and stitch developed from his referencing of his past (both his father and grandfather were builders)

The Young Embroiderer's had a great time on Tuesday making felt using a potato masher and a cat litter tray! The theme was the seaside so first they came up with an idea for design. They made the felt using the wet method and when that was dry in the afternoon they added detail to it using the needlefelt method. The results were really stunning as you can see!

Alison Mercer June 2009 ' From Birth to Bonkers'

Alison Mercer's talk and slide show was truly inspirational and her witty observations often had us in stitches ( pardon the pun!). She lives and works in Wales and is currently artist in residence at Ysbyty Gwynedd. Working in a hopsital environment allows her to work with patients and staff and much of her work has been in the maternity department working with new mums. One of her more unusual projects involves working on used breast pads to make an installation.

The driving force behind her work is the need to discover who she is and why stitch is important to her. A recurrent theme in her work is her ancestors, as part of the process of discovering who she is and she often uses text and images to explore this. More recently the birth of her daughter and motherhood has provided inspiration for her numerous sketchbooks and stitched work.

Lydia Solomon Coral Reef Embroideries

For our March meeting Lydia Solomon can to talk to us about her 'coral reef embroideries'. Although reluctant at first, she developed a passion for diving and uses underwater photography and an underwater-sketchpad to capture images. By using a variety of media, embroidery and lots of ingenuity she has created a series of extremely realistic three-dimensional embroideries.

In fact they are so realistic that when she exhibited them at the diving show at the NEC people shunned her at first as they thought she had used actual pieces of coral from the reefs. It was only when she put up signs saying that they were made out of fabric etc that people in the diving fraternity came to talk to her.!!

Our Young Embroiderer's Groups meets most school holidays. We meet arrange one off all- day workshops where the young people ( boys and girls) can use their creative talents to produce a work of art. In this workshop we transfered images onto fabric which were then stitched into and streatched over canvas.

In this workshop we made mixed media collages using leaves. The results were stunning

Nikki Parmenter

For the November 2008 meeting we were treated to a visual feast by local textile artist, Nikki Parmenter. Nikki's work arrived wrapped up as it had recently been exhibited at Salford Art Gallery. As she unwrapped the pieces we gasped in amazement at the rich texture, jewel-like colours and sheer scale of some of the pieces.

Her work is inspired by the jewel-like colours of India and each of her pieces is backed up a detailed research on the subject so is educational as well as decorative.
